Though not originally comic-related, steampunk cosplay is often a regular occurrence at comic cons.

Steampunk is a culture in its own right, based loosely on late 1800’s / early 1900’s fashion, with modern touches mixed in, creating an awesome look that’s all its own. Since it was the era when machines were coming into expanded industrialized use, steampunk cosplay often includes details such as clockworks, buckles, metal, and machine gears. Goggles also make frequent appearances in steampunk cosplay, due to the abundance moving machines in steampunk literature.

The steampunk trend started mostly due to steampunk themed novels, which are a genre all their own. They’re often a mix of sci-fi and fantasy and generally set in the Victorian era, or something similar. The novels of Jules Verne and H.G. Wells were the inspirations for many modern steampunk novels. As the popularity of steampunk novels rose, naturally so did the appeal of cosplaying such characters, and thus the steampunk cosplay was born. There are now steampunk comics as well, cementing the place of steampunk cosplay at comic cons.

Creatively speaking, steampunk cosplay is probably one of the most unlimited forms of cosplay. One of the coolest things about it is that the cosplayer doesn’t necessarily have to be a specific character. They can just be their own original steampunk character, taking whichever elements of streampunk fashion they like best. The creation of their steampunk character is limited only by their imagination.

On the flipside, doing a specific character is exactly what some people aim to do. Some people choosing steampunk, cosplay popular characters in steampunk fashion. They do this by taking the basic design of a popular character, and then altering the colors, design, and accessories to fit the steampunk mold, whole still maintaining the semblance of the original characters. One of my favorite such characters is Seraphima’s awesome steampunk cosplay of Rogue from X-men
