Cheap And Easy DIY Steampunk Goggles (cardboard)

In this tutorial I’ll show you how to make a pair of cheap and easy DIY steampunk goggles. These are made out of cardboard, so they’re perfect for any budget.

Cheap And Easy DIY Steampunk Goggles (cardboard)

MATERIALS USED
Goggle template (available for free in my patterns vault)
Thin cardboard (such as cereal box cardboard)
Pencil
Scissors
Hot glue gun
Glue that will bond metal (Power-tac)
Clear plastic (I used an old folder)
Puffy paint (any color)
Glorious Gold Metallic paint
Metallic antique copper paint
Paint brush
Gears
Monocle
Distressed Brads
Awl
A thin piece of brown distressed fabric

I’m planning to just wear my goggles on top of my head (like with many steampunk costumes). As such, I didn’t bother padding the eye sockets. However, if you plan to actually wear them on your eyes, you can hot glue a line of craft foam around the bottom of the cardboard to give you a padded surface to go against your face. Just remember, they will not actually protect you from welding…

Once you have the base of your DIY steampunk goggles, you can go crazy with the accents. I used a few gears, a monocle, and some distressed scrapbooking brads (because I have a tendency to use scrapbooking notions for pretty much everything except scrapbooking πŸ˜‰ ). I kept my goggles’ accents fairly simple, but can you add as many as you desire. Just head for the Tim Holtz aisle of your local craft store and you’ll be in steampunk accents heaven.

A Very Steampunk Christmas…

This is actually the first cosplay tutorial I’ve done in quite a while that hasn’t been a request. (Because a girl has to do something for herself once in a while right?). I’m planning to eventually have it be part of steampunk elf costume that I hope to have done in time for next Christmas.

A few years ago I saw a Santa in a store, and his elf was a steampunk elf. Since then I’ve been obsessed with the idea. I always dress up as an elf every Christmas Eve anyway, so I’ve just been itching to try a steampunk elf costume. The DIY steampunk goggles were the easiest place to start. But keep watch for a few more future installments to the completed costume over the coming year.

Any fellow steampunks out there among my readers, or am I standing here alone on my flying ship?
