In this week’s tutorial I’ll show you how to make some DIY I Dream of Jeannie costume pants. These could also be used for a belly dancer costume.

MATERIALS USED:
Jeannie pants waistband template (available free in my patterns vault)
2 yards of pink chiffon
2 yards of pink satin
Dark pink fabric for waistband (I cut up an old dress for mine)
Needle and thread or sewing machine
Pink rickrack
Elastic
Fabric glue
Short zipper
Scissors

This video is a small part of the full I dream of Jeannie costume tutorial from my new book: Cosplaying When You’re Broke (available on Amazon or Smashwords or wherever books are sold), which shows how to make awesome costumes without breaking the bank.

It takes a fair bit of fabric to make these pants, as they need to be extra wide. I didn’t want my pants to be see-through, so rather than having to purchase 20 yards of chiffon, I simply chose to layer the chiffon over a layer of satin. It saved me dollars, and probably a lot of struggling with multiple layers of somewhat unruly chiffon as well.

While it does change the drape a bit, as the satin is much stiffer than chiffon, since I was using it for a Jeannie costume, they didn’t need to look perfect, as they’re quite recognizable with the costume. If you intend to use your pants for actual belly dancing, you may want to use a fabric with more give or drape.

And of course, once the pants are done, be sure to dance around in them to the I Dream of Jeannie theme song, which you know will be playing in your head at some point while wearing these πŸ˜‰
