Jack Sparrow Costume Part 2: Shirt, Pants, Sash

In this tutorial I’ll show you an easy method for how to make a Jack Sparrow costume, the pants, shirt, and sash portion.

How to Make a Jack Sparrow Costume: Shirt, Pants, Sash

MATERIALS USED:
1 large white men’s shirt (polo shirt), bigger than your usual size
2 yds of white (or off-white) muslin
Scissors
Red fabric marker (not sure of the exact color name, they all came together in 1 pack)
Pair of loose brown pants
12 buttons
Sewing machine (or needle and thread)
Needle and thread (to sew on buttons)

I used bases from the Salvation Army for both the shirt and pants and then altered them to get the appropriate pirate look. It not only makes creating this part of the costume easy, but it also makes it more eco-friendly (since it’s used clothing), and much more affordable (the shirt and pants were $2 apiece). The extra muslin material I used for the sleeves and sash was just some muslin I got from JoAnn Fabrics for $3 a yard. So basically I was able to put together the shirt, sash, and pants for $10.

I just used the buttons I had on hand for Jack Sparrow’s pants, but they don’t really look anything like the ones that were in the movie. If you want to be a bit more authentic, use the older style buttons (the type that don’t have any holes drilled through them, but rather just have a loop on the back that you sew to the garment).

Jack Sparrow’s pants also had a little buckle at the bottom under the buttons, but I didn’t bother putting it on, since it’s covered by the boot most of the time anyway. Also, I made my brother’s pants a bit longer at his request, but they should actually only be just a little below the knee.

Be sure to stick around for the end of the video and let me know if you enjoy the 5 second “silent film” at the end featuring my brother as Jack Sparrow in the story of The Captain and the Case of the Burned Rum 😉
