Remove Smoke Smell From Fabric The Easy Way

If you’ve ever gotten something from a smoker’s home, you know how difficult it can be to remove smoke smell from fabric. Fortunately Mother Nature offers a perfect, simple solution.

Remove Smoke Smell From Fabric the Easy Way

I buy almost everything second hand (it’s better for the planet and a whole lot cheaper), so it’s inevitable that once in a while I end up with something that came from a smoker’s house. If it’s something like clothes, it’s not a big deal because you can easily remove smoke smell from fabric by throwing them in the laundry a couple times, and poof, smoke smell gone. When it comes to furnishings, however, it can be a bit more tricky, since you can’t just throw them in the washing machine.

I recently purchased a few lamps with shades from the Salvation Army (check out my boho lamp tutorial if you want to see how I “improved” them a bit) that had definitely come from a smoker’s house. Since I don’t smoke myself, I didn’t want the smokey smell in my house, but since they were lamp shades, I couldn’t just wash them.

You Are My Sunshine…

I remembered an old trick about the sun that my mom taught me. Sunshine is a natural smoke odor killer. You can leave any smoke-infused fabric item outside for a few days in the sun and the smokey smell just disappears.

I hung my lampshades from a dead tree (so they got plenty of sunshine) for a few hours every day for 3 days. Then for good measure, I washed the shades down with some rubbing alcohol and hung them out in the sun for a few more hours the next two days. It worked like a charm. The smoke smell is completely gone now, and I’m able to enjoy my smoke free, $5 lamp shades.

Give it a try.
