Jack Sparrow Costume Part 3: Boots, Vest, and Sword

In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to make Captain Jack Sparrow’s boots and vest. Both are very easy and inexpensive to make.

I’ll also show you how I made the sword, though that’s something I made a long time ago, so that’ll be an explanation, not a live-making part of the tutorial. They were swords my siblings and I made ages ago when we went as the 3 Musketeers to the Renaissance festival. So I don’t recall all the exact paint colors, etc. we used then, but I’ve got the basics in the materials list below and I explain how it was made in the video. We used wood for the circle on the hilt, but you could also use cardboard instead if you want something easier to cut.

MATERIALS USED:
1 pair of boots
Half yard of distressed fabric (found in JoAnn Fabrics)
1 sheet of 3mm craft foam
1 brown or gray button-down shirt
Scissors
Hot glue gun
Awl
Yarn or lacing
Sewing machine or needle and thread

For Sword:
Long piece of wood, 1 inch wide and 1/2 thick
Circle cut from cardboard or 1/8 inch thick wood
Two 1/4 inch x 1/4 pieces of wood
Wood glue
masking tape
Gold and silver paint
3 5-inch pieces of thick wire (like bailing wire)
Saw

The base for the vest was just a shirt I found for $3 in the Salvation army. It was originally quite a bit longer, as Jack’s vest went below his waist, but I accidentally shrunk it in the dryer after I’d washed it. So my brother’s Sparrow vest here is quite a bit shorter than the one in the movie.

The technique I use to make the pirate boots will work on any pair of boots without harming them. So you can use a pair of boots you already have, without having to get a new set. The distressed fabric I used at the top I found in JoAnn Fabrics. But if you want an alternative, you can also cut rectangles from paper bags and do some messy painting over them with several different shades of brown paint to mimic the look of leather.

This is the third part of my Jack Sparrow costume series, if you missed the first parts of the tutorial, click here for the compass, or click here for the shirt, pants, and sash tutorial.

Happy pirating!
